Private Brand continues to be an exciting subject as the end of the first quarter approaches, this week Target once again features Private Brand on the cover of its flyer and takes it to an aggressive and exciting next level. The redesigned value fashion Private Brand Room Essentials occupies not just the entire cover but the first four pages. This is an amazing commitment of ad space and certainly an indication of a bigger strategy at play.


In the meantime their archrivals from Bentonville continue to hammer the airwaves (TV and web) with their value fashion Private Brand Hometrends. This is shaping up to be a defining battle between the two discount giants, who do you think will win?

Up & Up is Front Page News.

This weeks Target flyer once again features Private Brand, the 24 page flyer devotes the entire cover to Up &Up along with another quarter page on page 2, a half page is devoted to Market Pantry on page 4 and the rest of the flyer is littered with Archer Farms, Merona and Mossimo. Interestingly the half page devoted to Market Pantry uses the headline, “Market Pantry: premium quality at unbeatable prices” which seems to muddy the line between Market Pantry and Archer Farms. Is it repositioning the brand or just fuzzy marketing?

Target Launches Room Essentials In Style.

In what is the continuing evolution of the Target Private Brand portfolio, this week Target relaunched its virtually unknown brand Room Essentials with extensive instore marketing, signage and displays as well as a full page in the weekly flyer. In May 2009 I reported on the redesign and refresh of Room Essentials in the post “Target: reStyles, reDecorates & reOrganizes” and the apparent portfolio strategy shift that created Up & Up and allowed the remaining Bullseye on Target Home to reinforce the overall fashion forward “Expect More, Pay Less” mantra.

This creates a two tier strategy with Target Home at the premium level and Room Essentials at the everyday/mid tier level and mirrors the tiers in food with Archer Farms and Market Pantry.

The commitment that Target has made to relaunching and growing Room Essentials is both unusual and impressive. Although many retailers will invest in their premium or specialty Private Brands very few spend the time or money to build the mid tier or value brands. The economy and smart strategies appear to be giving both Room Essentials and Market Pantry an opportunity to engage consumers and become relevant brands.

2009년은 세계경제위기로 인하여 미국시장에서는 PL이 비약적으로 성장한 한해였으며..
제조업체들 또한 유통업체의 PL강화전략에 적극적으로 대응한 한해였다..

PL 전문 블로그인 myprivatebrand 에서는 Google Analytics를 이용하여 2009년 1년간 독자들에게 가장 많이 읽힌 포스트와 토픽을 선정하였다.

  1. Great Value Relaunch – Walmart
    Great Value was the subject of the year and more than just one post it is an entire series of more than a dozen posts detailing the radical redesign and the strategic shift that it signaled. The footnote to this is the apparent demise of the Sam’s Choice brand.
  2. Up & Up Launch – Target
    Target made news just after Walmart when it made what was arguably the most significant strategic shift in Private Brand eliminating the iconic Bullseye brand and replacing it with Up & Up.
  3. Target: Restyles Redecorates and Reorganizes
    The Room Essentials redesign and relaunch is the unheralded piece of Target’s Private brand strategy, combined with the Up & Up launch it illustrated how a Private Brand portfolio strategy can create a group of brands that builds and reinforces the retailer brand. Essentially the redesign of Room Essentials and the launch of Up & Up allowed Target to use the Bullseye logo on the redesigned Target Home – creating a premium home decor brand that further validated their “Expect More, Pay Less” tagline.
  4. Piggly Wiggly Redesign
    This article features the redesign of the Piggly Wiggly house brand. Through the lens of a store walk/shop. Shopping for supplies during a summer vacation my family and I visited a Piggly Wiggly just outside of Charleston, SC. Piggly Wiggly loved the post and has a link to it on the front page of their website.

  8. Clover Valley Tastes Better With Great Design – Dollar General.

This weeks Target circular (November 8-14 2009) features its new brand Up & Up in a full-page price comparison to national brand. This is a not a new tactic for Target, I have written posts about it before however it continues to feel fresh and a bit daring. Note the significant price differences on each of the products.


근데..
why pay more? 는 영국 ASDA (walmart 소유의) 슬로건이었는데 말이지..
기냥 막 갖다쓰나보네..ㅋ

구글신께 여쭈어보니..
디자이너 브랜드에서 Target 전용 PNB를 만들어 준 모양..
이 경기불황시기에 어케 괜찮을랑가..ㅡㅡ;
